Crunching noises might be damaging his teeth? Is this a concern.
Q Our vet says: It is normal for crunching noises to be heard when cats are eating hard foods. You should not feed cats cooked bones as these are prone to splintering.

Blue film on cat's eye

Q Our vet says: Problems with eyes should always be taken seriously. It sounds as if this might be a painful condition for your cat. (Animals close their eyes if they are painful just like we do).
Your cat does need to be taken to your vet.

My cat had to visit the vet last week for a tummy upset and while we were there she checked his teeth and said that his teeth had a bad plaque build up and his gum looked a bit red. She then went on to tell me that he would need a general anaesthetic to have a scale and polish at a cost of around £300 once you added in putting him on an IV etc for hydration. I felt a little bit like I was getting a sales pitch so I don't know if this is the kind of price dental work should cost. As much as I want to do the best for my cat this is money I just don't have right now so I wonder if there is anything else I can do to try and improve things without putting him through an anaesthetic. I would appreciate any advice.
Q Our vet says: Many animals suffer with their teeth and the discomfort often goes undiscovered for a long time. Not only do dental problems lead to pain and infection in the mouth but systemic problems may occur later on due to all those bacteria.

It is worth having dental treatments for pets but it can be expensive. Cats must have an anaesthetic to allow their teeth to be properly scaled and polished. Just think how much a human dentist would charge for treatment under anaesthetic! Vets use high quality equipment which must be constantly maintained so we do have to charge realistic fees.

It sounds as if your vet does have your cat's welfare at heart. Spotting problems such as this and suggesting treatment will often save your cat discomfort and save you money in the long run.

If you really cannot manage the dental treatment right now you could try Logic gel or homeopathic Fragaria. Have a look at our dental care section.

My kitten won't eat

I have a 9 week old kitten but he is not eating his food. He eats his cat biscuits and his milk but he won't eat any solid food. He will eat chicken, fish, prawns and things like that but not his normal food a cat is suppose to eat! I've tried everything now and don't know what to do. Can you help me please?
Q Our vet says: It sounds as though Blackjack has decided he likes the finer things in life! You must remember you may have 15 more years of cooking him chicken and prawns, so try to get him onto a complete diet as soon as you can. This is also less likely to upset his tummy as changing diets can do. We recommend Hills or Royal Canin and you can get complete food for each life-stage so you can be sure he is getting all the nutritional requirements he needs.
If at first he refuses to eat, don't give in and cook him something tasty or he will soon learn that leaving his proper
food means he gets special treats. Leave his food down for him for a while and he will probably eat it eventually. Do be sure that he does eat something though; some cats will refuse food for so long that they can become ill. Slowly decrease the amount of home cooked food and introduce more of the food you want him to eat. Over time he is likely to accept this.

Q Vikki asks about Kitty (cat) :
Recently my cat had kittens and they are now 5 weeks old. There are 5 of them and they all run around except one; it looks drunk! As soon as it gets up it falls straight back down and can barely walk. It does look like the runt. I've never had any major problems with kittens before. What I can do? I make sure he is fed and mum gets time alone with it. Very grateful
Q Our vet says: It sounds as if this kitten does have a problem. Sometimes kittens are born with congenital defects or can have problems with their development due to infection or other factors. You should really get this kitten checked by your local vet who will be able to give you an informed opinion about what may be done.

I have had my kitten 3 days and she won't eat anything. I have tried everything, wet food, dry food, even some chicken. All she will have is kitten milk. Please help, I have put it on her nose but nothing is working.
Q Our vet says: You should take your kitten to your vet to be checked in case there is a medical reason for this. If your kitten is very young it could be that she is not properly weaned onto solid food yet. It sounds like you need help so please take her along to your vet.
