Inner eyelid not retracting
Species: cat | Category: other | Submitted: 15 July 2009 07:15PM | viewed 29231 times
Q Tilly asks about Troy (cat) :
I have a cat who is 4 years old and recently (only 5 or 6 days now) I have noticed his inner eyelid isn't going back into the corner of his eyes like normal. The odd thing is, it is in both eyes and not just one. I've looked and cannot see anything in them and he seems well in himself and not rubbing them. Is this normal?
Q Our vet says: This can happen when cats are not feeling very well generally. Often you will find that your cat has something such as a tummy upset which you may not have noticed if he goes outside to the loo. A trip to the vet would be a good idea.

Soft, really stinky poos!
Species: cat | Category: other | Submitted: 13-May-09 06:38PM | viewed 40025 times
Q Shaun asks about Dandy (cat) :
My cat is now 14 years old and until recently he has been an outdoor cat. I have recently moved home into the city centre and he can no longer go outside, but he seems pretty happy in the flat with his litter tray. However, his poos are really stinky! To the extent that the smell wakes me up and I have to scoop them up and flush them down the loo! He doesn't seem at all put out, not sore or complaining at all, perfectly the same behaviour as when he was outdoors. Because he was outdoors before I don't know if this problem has always existed, or if this is a new problem but I'm not sure what to do to solve this problem. I've tried feeding him wet food and dried food between all the different major brands but nothing seems to help or change the outcome. Now, I didn't want to embarrass the wee man with a visit to the vet as there may be some supplement I can give him, so I am looking for your advice. So please, please, please help, for my nose as well as his bum! Thanks-!!
Q Our vet says: Unfortunately I also find cat faeces are extremely smelly, (even when completely normal). So long as there are no signs of diarrhoea, blood, mucus, worms or other abnormalities and your cat is not having problems when trying to pass the faeces this could be completely normal.

You could always take a sample of the faeces along to your local vet and ask them to take a look at it if you are concerned.

If the smell really gets to you, you could try using a hooded cat litter tray with a filter to help prevent nasty odours getting out such as our hooded litter tray. At least you might get a better night's sleep!
A cat in an apartment
Species: cat | Category: other | Submitted: 07-May-09 10:45AM | viewed 40184 times
Q Katherine asks about seraphim (cat) :
Hi, I am moving into a large apartment on the 5th floor in London. I have a cat in Australia that I would like to bring over to live with me. She is used to being an indoor and outdoor cat. Is it cruel to bring her over to live in my apartment when she will only have supervised time in the communal garden with me? I also read a lot about cats getting stolen in England. I am also concerned about this which is why I wouldn't let her in the garden alone. Can you give me professional advice on this?
Q Our vet says: Provided your cat has plenty of stimulation and toys in your apartment it will not be cruel and she will certainly be safer from traffic and potential theft. She obviously has a caring owner at the moment and she is better off staying with you, wherever you are, than if she would face an uncertain future being re-homed because of your move.
cat pees on the floor but only sometimes
Species: cat | Category: other | Submitted: 18-Oct-07 04:08AM | viewed 40833 times
Q Amy asks:
I bought my mom a cat, he is about 2 months old; he pees in the litter box but sometimes, usually near sleep time, or during the day pees and poops on the floor. We don't know why because sometimes he uses the litter box.
Q Our vet says: Check to see if he uses the litter box when it is clean but not if he has used it once already. Many cats will not re-use a dirty litter tray until it has been completely cleaned; they can be very fastidious creatures.

If this is the case you could try to make sure you clean the tray and replace the litter after every use or alternatively supply more than one box for your cat to use and have one big cleaning session at the end of the day.
Pookie the cat has a tail that is hanging down
Species: cat | Category: other | Submitted: 19-Aug-07 12:33AM | viewed 40689 times
Q Alice asks:
Pookie is not raising his tail as he normally would. He is 13 years old. He's pretty spunky most of the time. I just never have seen his tail down before. I am concerned that it might be broken or one of my other cat's might have injured him. Help!
Q Our vet says: It does sound as if it needs attention. Often the tail hanging limp and not moving is a sign that it is broken, but there are other possible reasons (for example, an abscess or other type of lesion causing pain when the tail is raised) - so you should take him along to your local vet to find out what is wrong.
Nursing her kitten
Species: cat | Category: other | Submitted: 28-May-07 07:45PM | viewed 25589 times
Q Dean asks:
My cat has a 3 week old kitten and has been very good at nursing so far. But we let her out over 12 hours ago and she hasn't returned. We are a bit worried about how long the kitten can go without her mother's milk and what we can do with regards to nursing the kitten.
Q Our vet says: Hopefully by now your cat has returned, but if not then you should contact your local vet and get some milk replacer if you need to start feeding the kitten yourself. At three weeks of age it is possible to start the introduction of solid food but the kitten will still need mostly milk. I hope that the mother returns safe and well.
