Not eating

Q Lisa asks about Treacle (dog) :
Treacle is a female, twelve and a half year old dog (lab-staff cross). She has always been full of life and rather fat! For the last fortnight or so, she has been off her food, and when she does eat (she will only eat 'real' meat e.g. chicken with some rice) - it goes straight through her or she vomits. As I said, she has always been rather fat, but she now looks like a bag of bones and her back bone can almost be made out. Despite this she is still happy to go for walks (which we have cut down a lot), although she is very slow. And she has a nice wet nose and glossy coat! In previous years she has gone off her food and slowed down in the heat but not to this extent. Should we ride out the summer months or visit the vet? Thank you. Lisa & Treacle
Q Our vet says: You should certainly take her to your vet!

Small lump under eye

Q Warren asks about KaizerChief (dog - Rhodesian mix breed, M) :
My dog has a small red lump under his eye. At first I thought it might be a tick but I can't see any parasite. It doesn't seem to bother him, but he's had it about a week now. What could it be?
Q Our vet says: This needs to be looked at by your vet, it could possibly be a small tumour. If it is a tumour then your vet may recommend further tests and/or removal of the lump. In this location it is important to get a diagnosis promptly since if this lump gets larger it could start to affect the eyelid function and any necessary surgery could become more complicated.
Dog with ear problem

Q Gavin asks about keg (dog - staffy, F) :
My dog has a problem with her left ear. She is constantly rubbing and scratching it. It has a black waxy discharge. Now there is a lump (for want of a better word) on her ear lobe. Any ideas?
Q Our vet says: What you are describing sounds like an ear infection that has caused your dog to traumatize the ear and a haematoma (like a large blood blister) has perhaps formed too (the lump). Only a vet who can actually see your dog can make a diagnosis but it definitely sounds as if your dog will be in pain with the ear so you should get her treated as soon as you can.
Howling

Q Louisa asks about ROCKY (dog) :
Hi. My 17 year old staffie over these last few days is whining and howling. He won't leave my side. He has lost a lot of weight but he has started to gain his weight back now. Can you tell me, do you think he is in pain?
Q Our vet says: It would be advisable to get Rocky checked by your vet to see if he is in pain. If there is no evidence of pain, it may be age related behaviour in which case your vet can advise you on medication and diet to help him cope with the aging process.
Odour problem

Q Lilias asks about tyson (dog - not known, M) :
My dog has got a smell from his rear and we gave him a bath, but a little while later it came back. Does that happen in males?
Q Our vet says: If your dog really smells it is worth getting a vet to check him, since strong unpleasant odours can often mean that there is a bacterial infection somewhere. In this kind of area it could also be his anal glands. Is he itching his bottom or scooting along the carpet on his bottom? For general doggy smells you could try using Pet Fresh which I think makes pets smell great!
Pregnant dog not eating

Q Julie asks:
My dog (King Charles Cavalier) has gone off her food. She will only eat a few small pieces of chicken but I don't think it's a good idea as this tends to give her diarrhoea.
Q Our vet says: Since you say she is pregnant it is important that you take her to your vet to be checked. Something could be wrong if she has gone off her food and it would be wise to ensure that all is well.
