Dog with meningitis

Species: dog | Category: medical-surgical | Submitted: 3 May 2009 11:07AM | viewed 4490 times
Q David asks about niles (dog - whippet, M) :

My dog has both bacterial and inflammatory meningitis. He is being treated with steroids and obviously has a low resistance at the moment. My question is whether it is possible for him to have picked up this disease through the tortoise (i saw him licking or eating their faeces just before he was taken ill)? Or whether he is open to any disease they may carry while he is in this weakened state?

Q Our vet says: It is probably unlikely that your dog's problems were caused by the tortoise. However tortoises and other reptiles can carry diseases such as Salmonella which people and other pets may catch. Tortoises may show no signs of carrying Salmonella so it is very important to practice good hygiene around them especially if children are involved. I do hope your dog gets better soon.
