Back legs giving way

Q Venetia asks about Hooligan (dog - Staffordshire Bull Terrier, M) :

Advice needed. My 16 year old boy is having back leg problems; they occasionally give way but this is frequent over the last couple of days. Tonight he couldn't get on the settee, fell on his bum and yelped for the first time. My vet has checked him in the past with this problem and did say due to old age the muscles were not working properly. Some days he is better than others but obviously he is an old boy. Is there anything I can do... I know I'm on borrowed time? I lost my eldest dog a year ago at the age of 18. Just dreading going to the vet...

Q Our vet says: It is probably worth getting Hooligan checked by your vet again. There are a variety of prescription diets, nutritional supplements and drugs that may benefit him and help him feel more comfortable. You could try Mobility Support Diet or a dietary supplement to help the joints. I am sure your vet will be able to help further.
